Living in MacTaggart

Researched July 2026 by our team · facts checked October 2026

MacTaggart sits on varied ground: the Whitemud Creek ravine forms its entire eastern and southeastern edge, Anthony Henday Drive runs along the south, and the established Terwillegar district sits immediately north. The neighbourhood is named for Sandy Mactaggart, the Edmonton entrepreneur and philanthropist who, with the province, gave the Mactaggart Nature Sanctuary to the University of Alberta and the City of Edmonton (University of Alberta), and the Whitemud Creek ravine is effectively the community’s backyard. Development began after the 2005 area structure plan and produced an unusual two-tier market: condos and townhomes provide genuine mid-market entry points, while MacTaggart Ridge carries the estate product — large-lot, ravine-backing homes. It suits buyers who want Terwillegar-district infrastructure — the rec centre, Lillian Osborne High School — with newer construction and real topography, and estate buyers who want ravine privacy without acreage-life logistics. The insider angle: the condo tier is an entry-level way into a neighbourhood of estate streets and a ravine edge — a fact the estate streetscape does a good job of hiding.

The ravine is the daily amenity. Whitemud Creek’s wooded corridor runs the full length of MacTaggart’s eastern edge, with forest trails along the edge of the estate streets. For built recreation, the Booster Juice Recreation Centre in Terwillegar (2051 Leger Road) is to the north, and Terwillegar Park’s off-leash river valley area is about 5 km to the north-west in a straight line. Retail splits between the Currents of Windermere, about 3 km to the west in a straight line, and Terwillegar Towne’s main street to the north. Nellie Carlson School (K–9) is inside the neighbourhood, and Lillian Osborne High School anchors the schools picture nearby. Anthony Henday Drive runs along the south edge.

New build or resale here?

MacTaggart is largely a resale market with a custom-build exception: most condos, townhomes and family singles trade as 2010s resale, while occasional infill and estate lots — particularly in and around MacTaggart Ridge — still see custom construction. For the mid-market tiers, the comparison is MacTaggart resale versus new builds in Windermere-district communities to the west: MacTaggart typically wins on lot maturity and ravine proximity, the new communities on warranty and specification. At the estate level the calculus is different — ravine-backing lots are a fixed commodity, so a well-kept MacTaggart Ridge resale competes on land value alone. Verify renovation permits carefully on the estate product; the dollars are large enough to warrant it.

Questions buyers ask about MacTaggart

What is MacTaggart Ridge?

MacTaggart Ridge is the neighbourhood’s estate pocket — large-lot, often ravine-backing homes along the Whitemud Creek edge, much of it custom-built, at the top of the community’s price range. It’s where the community earns its upscale reputation, though the wider neighbourhood also carries condos and townhomes at genuinely mid-market pricing.

What do homes in MacTaggart cost?

On there were 23 homes for sale in MacTaggart on the MLS® System, starting at $179,000 (REALTORS® Association of Edmonton data). Condos and townhomes form the entry tiers, family singles sit above them and MacTaggart Ridge estates carry the top of the range — so the mix of homes listed at any moment moves the starting price as much as the market does. Ask us for recent sales in the tier you’re shopping.

Are there schools in MacTaggart?

Yes — Nellie Carlson School, an Edmonton Public Schools K–9, is located in MacTaggart; for 2026–27 the school says it is full in several grades, where it takes only students who have newly moved into its attendance area. Monsignor William Irwin Catholic Elementary (Edmonton Catholic Schools, K–6) is nearby in Terwillegar Towne, and Lillian Osborne (public) and Mother Margaret Mary (Catholic) high schools are in the Terwillegar district. Designations in this quadrant shift as enrolment grows, so check a specific address with each board’s school locator before purchasing.

What makes MacTaggart different from Terwillegar next door?

Age and edge. MacTaggart’s housing is newer — post-2005 construction versus Terwillegar’s late-1990s-to-2000s stock — and its natural boundary is Whitemud Creek and the Mactaggart Nature Sanctuary along its east side. Terwillegar counters with more schools inside its boundaries and the recreation centre on Leger Road. Same infrastructure orbit, different vintage and topography.

How many homes are for sale in MacTaggart, and where do prices start?

On there were 23 homes for sale in MacTaggart on the MLS® System, starting at $179,000 (REALTORS® Association of Edmonton data).

Are new homes being built in MacTaggart?
