Living in Alces

Researched July 2026 by our team · facts checked October 2026

Alces is where southeast Edmonton starts over. Alces (formerly Decoteau North) was the first neighbourhood in the City’s Decoteau plan area to get an approved neighbourhood plan (2018) and its first new-home building permits (2023), and it sits between Ellerslie Road and Anthony Henday Drive. Cantiro is the master developer, the City’s Decoteau plan keeps the area’s wetlands and links them with parks and trails, and the housing runs from rear-lane townhomes to full front-garage family homes. The City issued building permits for about 1,380 new homes in Alces from 2023 to October 2026. Alces suits buyers who want a genuinely new home at a southeast price point and who are comfortable arriving before the amenities do — schools, retail and transit will follow the rooftops. The insider view: lot choice is widest now, while the community is still being built.

Life in Alces currently orbits the wider southeast. The Meadows Community Recreation Centre and its public library branch are the closest major recreation stop, and daily shopping happens at Ellerslie Crossing and the retail clusters along Ellerslie Road near The Orchards. The City’s Decoteau plan keeps the area’s wetlands and links them with parks and trails; in Alces itself, Cantiro lists walking paths, parks and a pond with a gazebo. The community is named for the moose (Alces alces). Anthony Henday Drive runs along its north edge, toward Mill Woods Town Centre, the Grey Nuns Community Hospital and South Edmonton Common (about 8 km away in a straight line). Expect the amenity picture to improve steadily as Decoteau’s other neighbourhoods break ground.

  • Building now
New build or resale here?

Alces is effectively new-construction-only — there is very little resale stock, and what exists is nearly new, so the usual new-versus-resale debate collapses into a choice between building to spec and buying a quick possession. Building gives you first pick of lots. The trade-off is patience: amenities are still arriving, and early residents drive to The Orchards or Ellerslie for daily needs. Buyers who want established trees and schools within walking distance should look at Laurel or Tamarack instead.

As the guide lists them — designations follow your address

Questions buyers ask about Alces

Is Alces a good place to buy a new home in Edmonton?

Yes, if you are comfortable buying early in a community’s life. Lot selection is still good, and the City’s Decoteau Area Structure Plan calls for schools, parks and transit as the area builds out. The trade-off is that most amenities are outside the community today.

Which builders are active in Alces?

Cantiro is the master developer, and Cantiro Homes builds townhomes, duplexes and single-family designs (Cantiro Discovery Centre, 303 – 33 Street SW); ask us which other builders have homes there today. An independent REALTOR® can compare specifications and incentives across all of them.

Are there schools in Alces yet?

Not yet within the neighbourhood — Edmonton Public Schools lists an Alces K–9 among its capital-plan priorities, but it is not funded. The closest open schools are a kilometre or two away: Svend Hansen School (public K–9) in Laurel and Holy Family (Edmonton Catholic Schools, K–9) in Pollard Meadows, with Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack School (public, 10–12) in The Meadows. Check a specific address with each board’s school locator before you buy.

How is the commute from Alces?

Ellerslie Road runs west toward 91 Street, and Anthony Henday Drive runs along the north edge. There is no Edmonton Transit bus stop inside Alces yet (ETS stop data, October 2026), so plan on driving for now.

About this information. The guide’s text was researched July 2026; its facts were checked against official sources in October 2026. Distances are in a straight line from the centre of the outline on the map — to Edmonton City Hall for downtown, to the passenger terminal for the airport — rounded to the kilometre (those points © OpenStreetMap contributors); they are not driving distances, and the guides give no drive times. Homes for sale and the figures from them: the MLS® System (REALTORS® Association of Edmonton), read at 10:46 p.m. Edmonton time and rebuilt into this page every morning — homes only (houses, townhomes, condos and duplexes; no land, rentals or commercial listings).
