Researched July 2026 by our team · facts checked October 2026
Laurel is what a southeast Edmonton community looks like when the plan works. Part of The Meadows district, it grew through the 2010s and early 2020s around four stormwater ponds and connecting trails (City of Edmonton), and by 2026 it is largely built out — which changes the buying calculus. This is now primarily a near-new resale market, with a limited number of final-phase new builds and duplexes still available. The community has something its younger neighbours are still waiting for: a K–9 school inside the neighbourhood, the Meadows Community Recreation Centre nearby, and mature-enough landscaping that streets no longer feel raw. Laurel suits families who want new-ish construction without the wait, and buyers commuting east or south via Anthony Henday Drive and Whitemud Drive, both of which frame the district. The insider angle: a five-to-ten-year-old Laurel home often includes landscaping, fencing and window coverings that a new-home buyer still has to fund — compare both on a finished basis.
Laurel’s daily rhythm runs through The Meadows Community Recreation Centre — pools, ice, fitness and an Edmonton Public Library branch. The community’s own pond-and-trail loop connects playgrounds and naturalized shoreline, and it links into the wider Meadows path network. For shopping, Tamarack Common (17 Street and 23 Avenue, anchored by FreshCo) covers groceries and services, with Mill Woods Town Centre (2331 66 Street) and the Grey Nuns Community Hospital to the west. Anthony Henday Drive runs along the community’s southern edge, toward Sherwood Park, South Edmonton Common and the airport corridor.
The new-versus-resale question tilts differently in Laurel than in younger communities. Brand-new inventory is down to final phases and infill parcels, so most buyers are choosing between a nearly new resale — typically with landscaping, fencing, blinds and sometimes a finished basement already paid for — and a new build in a newer community such as Alces. Resale in Laurel buys you the established school and rec centre today. New construction nearby buys you warranty coverage, current specifications and lot choice. Run the total cost including extras before assuming new is more expensive.
As the guide lists them — designations follow your address
Designations follow the address — check a specific home with each board’s locator: Edmonton Public Schools — Find a School · Edmonton Catholic Schools — Locate Your School. Some Edmonton Public schools are full in some grades or use a lottery for new students; each school’s page on epsb.ca says which. School rankings: the Fraser Institute’s report card (on its own site).
We check school details against each board’s own published information and keep them as current as we can, but grades, programs, boundaries and enrolment can change at any time. Please confirm the details for a specific home directly with the school board before relying on them — school information here is a courtesy, not a guarantee.
New construction in and around Laurel
Laurel’s original builder group has largely completed the community; remaining new homes come from Edmonton production builders finishing final duplex and townhome phases. Rohit Homes does not have live inventory here in 2026.
Ask us for current builder price sheets, and whether a price includes GST.
A limited number — final phases and remaining duplex and townhome sites are still selling as of 2026, but the neighbourhood is largely built out. Most transactions are now near-new resale. If a brand-new home is the priority, newer communities such as Alces and Meltwater in the Decoteau area have more new construction.
Svend Hansen School, an Edmonton Public Schools K–9, sits inside the neighbourhood — a real advantage over younger southeast communities — and Edmonton Catholic Schools has construction funding for St. Genevieve Catholic Elementary/Junior High (K–9) in West Laurel, anticipated to open in fall 2028. Holy Family (Catholic K–9) is nearby in Pollard Meadows, Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack School (public, 10–12) opened next door in Silver Berry in 2024, and Holy Trinity Catholic High School is in Mill Woods. Always check a specific address with each board’s school locator.
It has a lot for families: a K–9 school in the neighbourhood, the Meadows Rec Centre and library nearby, connected pond trails, and housing that spans starter townhomes to larger move-up homes. The main compromise is distance to downtown — about 13 km in a straight line.
A near-new Laurel resale often includes landscaping, fencing and window coverings that a new build adds to its price; new construction counters with a full warranty and current specifications. A proper comparison prices both paths on a finished, move-in basis.

About this information. The guide’s text was researched July 2026; its facts were checked against official sources in October 2026. Distances are in a straight line from the centre of the outline on the map — to Edmonton City Hall for downtown, to the passenger terminal for the airport — rounded to the kilometre (those points © OpenStreetMap contributors); they are not driving distances, and the guides give no drive times. Homes for sale and the figures from them: the MLS® System (REALTORS® Association of Edmonton), read at 10:46 p.m. Edmonton time and rebuilt into this page every morning — homes only (houses, townhomes, condos and duplexes; no land, rentals or commercial listings).
