Living in Wîhkwêntôwin

Researched July 2026 by our team · facts checked October 2026

Wîhkwêntôwin — pronounced roughly wee-kwen-TOH-win, Cree for “circle of friends” — is the neighbourhood Edmonton long knew as Oliver, renamed by the City in 2024 after a community-led process, with the historic Oliver School following suit as Wîhkwêntôwin School. The name changed; the geography that made Oliver famous did not. It is Edmonton’s most populous neighbourhood and one of its densest (City of Edmonton Archives), running from 109 Street to 124 Street between 104 Avenue and the top of the North Saskatchewan River valley, which means downtown is next door, the river valley stair-and-trail system is at the end of the block, and the 124 Street gallery-and-restaurant district and the Brewery District’s shops bracket daily life. The market here is overwhelmingly condominium, running from older apartment units at the entry level to premium high-rise and Victoria Promenade properties at the top. It suits first-time buyers priced out of detached product, downsizers who want walkability, and investors playing the urban-core recovery. The insider angle: the Valley Line West LRT is under construction along the neighbourhood’s north edge (City of Edmonton) — confirm current timelines before counting on it.

Life in Wîhkwêntôwin is lived on foot. The river valley’s stair systems and Victoria Promenade handle morning runs with skyline views; 124 Street supplies galleries, cafés and independent restaurants (124 Street & Area Business Association); and the Brewery District adds shops and services. Downtown’s employment core, Rogers Place and the ICE District are in the neighbourhood to the east, and Grant MacEwan University anchors the neighbourhood’s student energy. The Wîhkwêntôwin Outdoor Pool (10315 119 Street), the neighbourhood park and the community rink serve as the community’s backyard. The community league, which led the renaming, runs programs in the neighbourhood.

New build or resale here?

There is essentially no new single-family construction in Wîhkwêntôwin — the new-versus-resale question here is new condo versus resale condo. Resale spans buildings from the 1970s through the 2010s. The discipline is in the condo documents — reserve fund studies, special assessments and post-tension cable reports matter far more than finishes. Newer boutique buildings offer current standards and warranties at a premium. Either way, we review the condo package before you write the offer, not after.

Schools

As the guide lists them — designations follow your address

  • Wîhkwêntôwin School — Edmonton Public Schools, K–9, regular and French immersion programs plus the Nellie McClung girls’ junior high program, located in the community (renamed from Oliver School in 2024)
  • Victoria School of the Arts — Edmonton Public, K–12 arts-focused, downtown nearby
  • Holy Child Catholic Elementary School — Edmonton Catholic Schools, K–6, French immersion and Spanish bilingual programs, located in the community
  • St. Joseph Catholic High School — Edmonton Catholic, Grades 10–12, in neighbouring Queen Mary Park — check a specific address with each board’s school locator

Questions buyers ask about Wîhkwêntôwin

Why was Oliver renamed Wîhkwêntôwin?

The City of Edmonton renamed the neighbourhood in 2024 following a process led by the community league, after residents examined the legacy of Frank Oliver, whose policies and newspaper actively harmed Indigenous Peoples. Wîhkwêntôwin is a Cree word meaning “circle of friends.” The historic Oliver School was likewise renamed Wîhkwêntôwin School by Edmonton Public Schools in 2024. Listings and older records may still reference Oliver — same neighbourhood, same boundaries.

What do homes in Wîhkwêntôwin cost?

On there were 164 homes for sale in Wîhkwêntôwin on the MLS® System, starting at $69,900 (REALTORS® Association of Edmonton data). The market is overwhelmingly condominium — older apartment units at the entry level, premium high-rise and river-view properties at the top — so condo-fee and reserve-fund diligence drives value here more than list price does.

Is Wîhkwêntôwin walkable without a car?

Yes, for most errands. Downtown, the Brewery District, 124 Street’s restaurants and the river valley trail network are all within walking distance, and the Valley Line West LRT under construction along the north edge will add rail access — confirm current construction timelines. Parking stalls often trade as a separate line item in condo sales.

Is a Wîhkwêntôwin condo a good investment?

The case for it: a future LRT line, downtown employment next door and a renamed community identity. The caution is equally real: older buildings can carry deferred maintenance and special-assessment risk. We treat each building individually — reserve fund, board minutes, rental mix — because in this market the building matters more than the block.

How many homes are for sale in Wîhkwêntôwin, and where do prices start?

On there were 164 homes for sale in Wîhkwêntôwin on the MLS® System, starting at $69,900 (REALTORS® Association of Edmonton data).

Are new homes being built in Wîhkwêntôwin?

From October 2025 to September 2026 the City of Edmonton issued new-building permits for 264 homes (dwelling units) in Wîhkwêntôwin, against 1 the year before.
